In its second installment, the Black Census is aiming to give Black people an opportunity to have their voices heard, as they are too often spoken about or spoken for.
The Black Futures Lab, in collaboration with IHeartMedia, has launched the second Black Census Project.
In its inaugural year, the Black Census Project conducted the largest survey of Black Americans since Reconstruction. Over 30,000 Black people across the nation participated in 2018, providing their views, political beliefs, concerns, and aspirations.
Four years later, the Black Census is looking to survey at least 200,000 Black people across class, disability, gender, geography, immigration status, and sexuality to collect and analyze the wants and needs of their communities.
The Black Census asks what Black Americans believe needs to be done to address key issues, including generational oppression, mass incarceration, police violence, and inequities in healthcare and economic access.
No personal information will be collected or shared from the survey. Instead, the Black Census will share the information it collects about the patterns happening across Black communities with survey participants, Black-led community-based organizations, and elected officials and legislators to implement effective change.
It's time for Black people to be included in the decisions that impact their own lives.
