WNBA star Brittney Griner surprised a crowd of people when she appeared at an MLK Day march in Phoenix, Arizona, NBC News reports.

Just weeks after her release from Russian prison, Griner was seen posing for photos with fans and riding in the back of a golf cart on Monday (January 16) during a march commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and legacy.

The Phoenix Mercury center, who attended the event with her wife, Cherelle Griner, told KPNX that she was happy to be home after being detained in Russia for over 10 months.

Griner was first detained in Russia on February 17, when authorities found cannabis oil in her bag at a Moscow airport. She plead guilty to drug charges and was sentenced to nine years in Russian prison.

The WNBA star was released and arrived back safely in the U.S. in December through a 1-for-1 prisoner swap involving Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Following her release, Griner said: "It feels so good to be home!"

"The last 10 months have been a battle at every turn," she continued in an Instagram post. "I dug deep to keep my faith and it was the love from so many of you that helped keep me going. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone for your help."
