The family of Alonzo Bagley, a 43-year-old Black man who was killed at the hands of Shreveport, Louisiana police, has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the officer who shot him.
Bagley, 43, was fatally shot on February 3 while fleeing from two Shreveport police officers who were responding to a "domestic disturbance" call, per the Associated Press. The lawsuit states that Bagley was unarmed and had his hands up when one of the officers, identified as Alexander Tyler, shot him. State police said last week that no weapon was found on or near Bagley at the time of the shooting.
“The lethal force used against Mr. Bagley was unjustified, unreasonable, excessive, and in violation of Mr. Bagley’s rights under the United States Constitution and the laws of the State of Louisiana,” the lawsuit says.
Last week, Lamar Davis, the superintendent of Louisiana State Police, said Bagley "went through a bedroom onto a balcony, jumped to the ground, and ran" after refusing to talk to the two officers, per AP.
“Upon rounding a corner of the building, Officer Tyler observed Mr. Bagley and fired one shot from his service weapon, which struck Mr. Bagley in the chest,” Davis said.
Both officers administered first aid, but Bagley was pronounced dead at a hospital, he added.
The state police's investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Investigators are expected to review body camera footage and car camera video, neither of which has been released to the public.
According to the suit, Bagley's stepdaughter witnessed the fatal shooting.
