Los Angeles Rams coach Raheem Morris is being hailed a hero after he helped save a three-year-old boy from drowning at a Las Vegas pool.
According to ESPN, Morris stepped when the boy stopped breathing. He used protocols learned within the NFL and retrieved an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to have ready for the doctor on-site.
"I saw people calling 911 so my first question was, where is the AED?" Morris told ESPN on Wednesday (May 31). "When I got back, we had a doctor on site that was able to start the compressions. I was able to hand the AED to him, get it open for him, put the pads on the child, and he ended up being okay."
The child was taken to a nearby hospital and released to go home just 24 hours later.
“I’m just thankful I knew what to do,” Morris said. “You just never know when you’re going to need that stuff.”
The Rams coach, who vacationing in Vegas with his wife and three kids, said Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin's collapse midgame on the field has brought a new "awareness and preparedness" for how to handle such situations.
On Wednesday, Rams COO Kevin Demoff highlighted Morris' "quick thinking" on Twitter.
"An amazing story of quick thinking in the moment by Raheem Morris & grateful to Reggie Scott for training our staff on CPR & AED," Demoff wrote. "Very possibly seeing the life-saving CPR Damar Hamlin received inspired our organization to get trained & saved another life."
"CPR & AEDs save lives," he added.
