Angela Bassett is finally getting an Oscar.
On Monday (June 26), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Bassett will receive an honorary Oscar at this year's Governors Awards alongside Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton. Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute will also be honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the ceremony, which is set to occur on November 18 in Los Angeles.
“The Academy’s Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four trailblazers who have transformed the film industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans,” Academy President Janet Yang said. “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.
The honorary Oscar is an accolade that honors "extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”
Bassett's upcoming award comes after she was first nominated, and arguably snubbed, for an Oscar for her portrayal of Tina Turner in the 1993 film What’s Love Got to Do With It? A number of social media users said the actress was once again overlooked by the Academy when she wasn't awarded Best Supporting Actress earlier this year for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Though she didn't take home the Oscar, Bassett made history as the first actor from a Marvel Studios film to receive a nod from the Academy. Bassett has had an over 40-year-long career in Hollywood, starring in television and movie projects including Malcolm X, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Mission: Impossible — Fallout, and Soul.
