Track star Sha’Carri Richardson put on a world-leading performance on Thursday (July 6) in the opening heat of the U.S. Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
According to CNN, Richardson ran the fastest time of the year in the women's 100m dash, coming in at 10.71 seconds. Richardson finished the race 0.25 seconds ahead of Brittany Brown, who earned second place.
Richardson's Thursday performance qualifies her for Friday's (July 7) semifinals at the US Championships and brings her one step closer to qualifying for the World Championships in Budapest next month. Her time beat out the previously-set world lead of 10.75 seconds run by Ivory Coast's Marie-Josee Ta Lou at the Oslo Diamond League last month.
The race also marked a personal best for Richardson. Earlier this year, the track star ran a time of 10.57 secs in the 100m at the Miramar Invitation, but her performance wasn't eligible for records because it was deemed "wind-aided," per CNN.
Richardson previously won the women’s 100-meter sprint at the U.S. Olympic trials in 2021 and was expected to be one of the biggest stars at the Tokyo Olympics, but she was barred from competing for a month after testing positive for cannabis. However, with her strong performance at the US Championships, which serve as trials for World Championships, Richardson looks set up to compete in her first global event.
