A Georgia father is facing murder charges after his seven-year-old son was shot and killed with a loaded gun he allegedly left in the car.
According to police, Dante Daugherty, 42, was arrested on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children in connection to a shooting incident on Monday (September 4) at a DeKalb County gas station, per 11 Alive News.
Police said that Daugherty left his six and seven-year-old sons in the car with a loaded gun as he was pumping gas at a Texaco station. According to an arrest warrant, the boys found the gun, and the seven-year-old was shot in the head.
It's unclear what happened in the moments before the gun was fired.
Officers responded to a report of a person shot at roughly 6:30 p.m., the DeKalb County Police Department said.
"A 7-year-old male was confirmed deceased. As a result of the investigation, the child’s father... was arrested and lodged in the DeKalb County Jail," a police statement reads.
Daugherty is set to appear in court on Wednesday (September 6).
