Ohio police have released new footage of the moments before Ta'Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant Black woman, was shot and killed by officers in the suburb of Blendon Township, CNN reports.
According to police, Young was accused of shoplifting before she was shot in the parking lot of a Kroger store on August 24. Young, who was pregnant, died at a hospital and the baby didn't survive.
Surveillance video released on Friday (September 8) shows Young walking around Kroger and putting several alcohol bottles in her bag. Young stood in line at a register before alarms went off as she left the store with two other women.
In another video released by police, Young can be seen exiting the store and getting into the driver's seat of a vehicle in the parking lot. Two officers approached the side and front of the vehicle, with one of them repeatedly instructing Young to "get out" of the vehicle.
Video shows the vehicle slowly moving forward. That's when the officer standing in front of the vehicle fired through the windshield. In the footage, officers appeared to chase after the vehicle, which rolled onto a sidewalk near the building.
Authorities broke through the window to reach the driver, who appeared to be slumped over.
“What we witness on the video footage released today is more evidence of murder, a lack of urgency in providing trained medical care to a clearly pregnant and wounded woman,” Sean Walton, an attorney representing Young's family, said in a statement. “What is clear is that petty theft does not justify murder and comply or die is not the rule of law in this country. The fact that an unarmed woman was shot unjustifiably, then dragged from her car and handcuffed after being shot should shock the conscience of everyone who watches the newly released video footage."
Young’s family is calling for charges against the officer who fatally shot the 21-year-old.
