An immigration agent in the Dominican Republic was taken into custody after authorities accused him of raping a Haitian woman in a detention cell at an international airport, according to ABC News. Officials in the country announced Tuesday (September 26) that the agent, who remains unidentified, was arrested last weekend.
Law enforcement said the victim was traveling to Nicaragua with her 4-year-old son when she was detained at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo Saturday morning (September 23). The mother was accused of presenting false documents over the last name of the boy's father, Mayra Jiménez, head of the Dominican Ministry for Women, told local media.
The woman ended up being placed in a detention cell with her son, and that's when the immigration agent showed up, officials say. The agent ordered the victim to take off her clothes, and she resisted at first. The mother also feared for the safety of the boy, who was sleeping in the cell at the time, according to prosecutor Milciades Guzmán.
Guzmán said prosecutors quickly requested an arrest warrant after hearing the victim's statement. He also requested a judge keep the suspect in jail as the investigation continues.
No word on the woman's status as of Thursday morning (September 28). The country's National Migration Agency said the government has custody of the 4-year-old.
