An Australian police officer threatened to shoot his colleague who almost gave away the plot for the film Top Gun: Maverick, NBC News reports.
Constable Dominic Francis Gaynor was working a police station counter in Sydney earlier this year when a junior colleague, Probationary Constable Morgan Royston, approached him, saying he had just seen Top Gun: Maverick.
According to a legal complaint filed by Royston, the probationary constable offered to spoil the movie's plot. Gaynor allegedly laughed, saying "Don't spoil the movie" and "I'll shoot you" before pointing a Glock handgun at Royston for five seconds.
Gaynor pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm with disregard for the complainant's safety and was handed down a two-year good behavior order and 100 hours of community service.
Chris Micali, Gaynor’s counsel, said the officer didn't intend to intimidate Royston and admitted to making a mistake.
In his sentencing remarks, Magistrate Michael Maher said Royston had shown "clearly dangerous reckless judgment." The judge recognized that Gaynor accepted responsibility but said he doubted how remorseful the officer was for his actions.
"I am somewhat guarded as to his understanding of the true impact that he’s had to his colleague," Maher said.
