An apartment fire in Florida has left a 29-year-old Black woman dead, per NBC Miami.
On Tuesday (December 26), a fire broke out at around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment in Tamarac, Florida. A family identified the victim of the fire as Keera Brabham, 29, a business owner who had a 4-year-old child.
“We had Christmas dinner yesterday, we spoke yesterday,” Juliet Brabham, the victim's mother, said.
The family described Keera as a happy and bubbly woman.
“My daughter is gone,” Juliet said. “She did not deserve to die.”
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. The victim's sister, Stephanie Gladman, believes Keera's ex-boyfriend set off the fire.
“I think he is jealous and controlling, and when she broke up with him, he didn’t know how to handle it and couldn’t move on," she said.
Cellphone footage from a neighbor shows the apartment billowing in smoke as first responders attempted to get the flames under control.
“I just heard the fire alarm and heard lots of screaming, people telling — telling everybody to get out and evacuate," an apartment resident said.
