Baylor University is honoring its former basketball star and current WNBA player Brittney Griner.
According to the Associated Press, Baylor University is set to retire Griner's No. 42 jersey at the new Foster Pavilion during the Bears game against Texas Tech on February 18.
“I’m honored to return home to Baylor and celebrate where so much of my journey started,” Griner said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Coach Nicki (Collen) and the entire Baylor community.”
The Phoenix Mercury star was drafted in 2013 as the first overall pick in the WNBA after leading the Bears to the Final Four twice.
Baylor University said Griner is the most decorated women's basketball player in its history. The WNBA star scored 3,283 points and 1,305 rebounds during her time at Baylor. She was a two-time National Player of the Year, four-time All-Big 12 First Team and All-Defensive Team selection, Freshman Player of the Year, and four-time Defensive Player of the Year.
Griner was also a part of the 2012 National Championship team that finished the season with a 40-0 record. In regular-season games, Griner led the Bears to a 50-8 record throughout her college career.
“We’re excited to have Brittney back on campus and honor her with the retirement of her jersey,” Baylor coach Nicki Collen said. “I have been saying this since I arrived at Baylor that she deserves to have her jersey retired and I wanted to make sure that happened when the timing was right.”
