A 15-year-old boy in Detroit is being hailed as a hero after he used CPR to help save his neighbor's life.
According to Click On Detroit, Gregory Pope lll recently received the Spirit of Detroit Award for using CPR to save a neighbor who stopped breathing. Pope is one of the youngest recipients of the award.
“It feels great,” Pope III said. “Just trying to keep doing what I do.”
Pope said he learned CPR techniques from watching Grey's Anatomy. After noticing his neighbor stopped breathing, Pope made the split-second decision to start chest compressions.
“I just felt like I had to do something because nobody really knew how to do it,” Pope III said. “So I just stepped in knowing what I know. I just did what I did.”
Pope's father said he was proud of the way his son handled the situation.
“Man, this is tremendous,” Gregory Pope II said. “I got butterflies just like when it happened. He just jumped in. I went back into the house because I couldn’t do nothing but cry.”
The teen's mother shared the same sentiment.
“It feels so great just to see him be honored for this tremendous action,” Sianna Smith said. “Most people will freeze up, and for him to just jump into action, it’s great.”
Pope said he hopes to play in the NFL when he grows up, and he may pursue medicine as a backup.
