Jerrod Carmichael is facing backlash after making a joke about how he and his white boyfriend perform race-based role-playing.

The comedian made the joke on HBO's Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show in a scene that debuted on Sunday (April 7).

"I sometimes joke to him that our relationship is like that of a slave and a master's son ... who, like, teaches me how to read by candlelight," Carmichael quipped of his white partner.

Though his boyfriend doesn't like the joke, Carmichael said he thinks it's "hilarious."

"Yeah, he groans too 'cause he's a good person. He doesn't like that f***ing joke. I like that joke. That's my burden, I think that s***'s hilarious!!" the comedian said.

Carmichael's joke didn't garner laughs from many social media users. Video of the scene was circulated online and sparked backlash.

"The fact that he has a platform to spew this mess makes him a danger to the Black Queer community," one X user tweeted.

"I consider this an attack on the black community. And it won’t be taken lightly," another person wrote.
