Normani is opening up about the difficulties she experienced as a group member of Fifth Harmony.

In an interview for The CUT, Normani detailed how being a part of Fifth Harmony with Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui was a "blessing that also traumatized her."

Fifth Harmony was formed in 2012 after the group appeared on X-factor. Cabello announced her departure from Fifth Harmony in 2016. In 2018, the remaining group members said they were going on an indefinite hiatus to focus on their solo careers.

Normani told The CUT her time in Fifth Harmony was "a prison sentence ordered and duly served." The singer recalled how her label allegedly failed to take action in 2016 after she received death threats and messages calling her "Normonkey."

The racist messages came in reaction to Normani calling Cabello "quirky" and "cute" in an interview. Fans who speculated tension between the girls interpreted Normani's comments as insulting.

Normani's mom, Andrea Hamilton, recalled "seeing my daughter's face Photoshopped on bodies of people being whipped" on social media.

"We just continued to do shows, and I was fearing for my life," Normani said. "But they continued to put me out there on the stage. It was pretty much like, 'The show goes on.'"

"It was probably the lowest point for me," she added.

Looking to the future, Normani is set to release her debut album, Dopamine, on June 14.
