A South Carolina man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend, WCBD reports.
Judge Robert Bonds handed down the 60-year sentence to Justin Cole Carroll, 24, who was found guilty in the 2021 murder of Donasia Alexus Holloway, his ex-girlfriend.
“Donasia tried to end this toxic relationship, and she tried to protect herself from her ex-boyfriend’s jealous rage,” Hunter Swanson of the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, who prosecuted the case, said. “But Justin Carroll refused to take no for an answer. He ignored a no-contact order, stalked her, and killed her.”
The shooting unfolded on May 22, 2021, after Holloway noticed Carroll's truck following her into the parking lot of her apartment complex. In fear for her safety, Holloway parked next to a Waterboro Police car and locked herself in her vehicle.
Holloway also shared a video on Snapchat citing Carroll's behavior and showing him approaching her car. She was later found dead in the parking lot after an officer heard gunshots from inside his apartment.
Carroll was picked up by Walterboro Police and the Colleton County Sheriff's Office after he fled the scene. In an interview, Carroll said he was in Charleston that night, and when further questioned said he wouldn't answer anymore without his lawyer being present.
Caroll was released as no evidence was available at the time. Investigators later found Holloway's Snapchat video and secured his arrest.
“Carroll’s criminal history includes a 2016 conviction in Charleston for first-degree assault and battery. He received eight years’ probation, which was revoked after he was arrested and convicted of unlawful carry of a pistol and possession of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to three years in prison and had recently been released when he and Holloway became involved,” the solicitor’s office wrote.
