Albany State University volleyball star Mariam Creighton has died, according to TMZ. She was 21.
On Sunday (May 12), a shooting at Atlanta nightclub Elleven45 Lounge left two people dead and four others injured, according to police.
Creighton, an HBCU volleyball player, and 20-year-old Nakyris Ridley were identified as the victims of the deadly shooting.
Albany State Athletics confirmed Creighton's death in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our student-athletes - Mariam Creighton," the athletics department tweeted. "The Golden Ram athletics community extends heartfelt condolences to Mari’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time."
Creighton's sister, Tiffany, told TMZ that the volleyball player was celebrating her niece's birthday when she was killed in the "senseless" nightclub shooting.
The Atlanta Police Department said in a statement: "Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred during a physical dispute at the location that escalated to gunfire."
The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference also shared a statement in the wake of Creighton's death.
"The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of Ms. Mariam Creighton, a beloved daughter, friend, proud Golden Ram, and cherished member of the SIAC," the statement reads."We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mari's family, friends, teammates and the Albany State community during this profoundly difficult time. Mari's lasting impact and enduring spirit will always be remembered."
