Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is facing backlash over comments she made about George Floyd, the 46-year-old Black man murdered by Minneapolis police in 2020.
Greene made the comments in response to remarks made by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D) during the House subcommittee hearing on the origins of COVID-19 on Monday (June 3).
“We have Jamie Raskin in there accusing us of worshiping Trump, worshiping a convicted felon,” Greene told reporters following the hearing.
The GOP lawmaker went on a rant about Floyd after a reporter pointed out that the former president, who was recently found guilty of 34 felony charges, had become a convicted felon.
“Yeah, so was George Floyd, and everybody — and you all too, the media — worship George Floyd. Democrats worship George Floyd. There were riots burning down the f—ng country over George Floyd,” Greene said.
Greene doubled down on her comments, sharing a clip of her exchange with the reporter on social media.
“I’m tired of Democrat antics claiming Republicans worship Donald Trump. I worship God!” Greene wrote on X, formerly Twitter, alongside the clip. “Democrats are still worshiping Convicted Felon George Floyd.”
Her tweet garnered widespread backlash, catching the attention of the Congressional Black Caucus.
“This is unhinged even for @RepMTG,” the caucus tweeted on Tuesday (June 4). “Her actions are unacceptable even by the lowest of Republican standards. George Floyd did not deserve to die, and a member of Congress should have the decency to acknowledge his humanity.”
