A mother has been arrested after her two-year-old son was found dead in a dumpster in Las Vegas, PEOPLE reports.

23-year-old Diaja Smith is facing charges of open murder and child abuse in connection to the death of her two-year-old son, Jacoby Robinson Jr.

The charges come after Jacoby's body was found in a Las Vegas dumpster on Friday (June 7). The discovery was made just hours after the boy was reported missing from his home in Vegas.

Neighbor Kelvyn Barnett said Smith appeared to be "hysterical" as she was seemingly searching for her son on Thursday (June 6).

"I saw the lady sitting there with her two other kids, really hysterical, and saying 'somebody took my kid, somebody took my kid,'" Barnett told the outlet. “To find out that she [allegedly] was the one that did this is the most shocking aspect of it all.” Barnett further alleged that Smith told him "that she was at the park and the kid was on the slide and she looked around and the kid was gone."

Jacoby Robinson, who is believed to be the two-year-old's father, was also arrested in connection to the death. He was initially charged with child abuse, but prosecutors said his charges may be upgraded to include murder.

Smith is currently being held at Clark County Detention Center.
