A Southern Mississippi University football player was killed in an off-campus shooting.
On Tuesday (June 11), Marcus "MJ" Daniels, a defensive back at Southern Mississippi, was shot to death at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a coroner confirmed per ESPN.
Daniels' body was taken to a medical examiner for an autopsy.
After transferring from Ole Miss, Daniels, 21, was a starting cornerback for Southern Miss last season. Daniels had 28 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles. He was expected to start as a safety for the 2024 season.
Prior to his college career, Daniels starred at George County High School.
Southern Miss coach Will Hall and other school officials joined police and emergency workers at the scene of Daniels' shooting.
In a statement, the university mourned the loss of Daniels.
"The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of M.J. Daniels, whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus," the statement reads. "We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."
