Track star Sha'Carri Richardson is headed to Paris.
On Saturday (June 22), Richardson, 24, ran this year's fastest 100-meter, clocking in a time of 10.71 seconds at the Olympic Trials.
Richardson's gold-medal finish earned her a spot on Team USA for track and field ahead of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
“I know that the hard work I've put into, not just physically on the track but as well as mentally and emotionally, to grow into the mature young lady that I am today and that I'm going to grow into was a full-fledged surreal moment for me to actually embrace and be able to show to the world and on the track,” Richardson told reporters following Saturday's race.
Richardson's training partners, Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, earned second and third place in the race, respectively. The 24-year-old said of their wins: “We didn’t put the world on notice; the world already knew who we were.”
Richardson previously qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, Richardson later tested positive for marijuana, a substance athletes are prohibited from using during competition, prompting the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to issue a monthlong suspension. The track star admitted to using the substance after learning of her mother's death.
This year's Olympics are set to kick off on July 26.
