A Black man says he plans to file a lawsuit after San Diego police shattered his car window during a routine traffic stop, per NBC San Diego.
Nicholas Hoskins, 31, said he was on his way to pick up his son at the bus stop in May when he was pulled over for allegedly rolling through a stop sign. Police ordered Hoskins to step out of his vehicle so they could search his car for weapons. Hoskins then repeatedly asked police what probable cause they had to search his vehicle.
Police declined to answer his question and broke Hoskins' passenger side window. Officers forced Hoskins out of his vehicle and handcuffed him. No weapons were found during a search of Hoskins' vehicle.
Still, Hoskins was taken to the police department where he received a citation for resisting arrest. Hoskins said he had to pay $1000 to retrieve his car from the impound and get his broken window fixed. Hoskins' 12-year-old son was also forced to wait at the bus stop for roughly two hours, unaware of his father's whereabouts.
Over the past year, Hoskins said he's been pulled over several times by San Diego police over minor infractions like a broken tail light and tinted windows.
Hoskins said he's retained an attorney to potentially file a lawsuit.
“It’s kind of demeaning. Emasculating. Sometimes I feel like I’m not a man,” Hoskins said in a statement.
