The Republican National Convention kicked off in Milwaukee on Monday (July 15) just days after the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
During the convention, Republican delegates officially nominated Trump, who appeared with a white bandage over his ear after he was shot, as its presidential nominee for the 2024 election, per CNN.
Trump was joined by his selected vice presidential running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, who was also officially confirmed by Republicans.
"Fight" chants roared through the crowd at the RNC, which marked Trump's first public appearance since Saturday's shooting at a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Several Republican leaders spoke during the convention, including South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, who called Trump an "American lion" for surviving the attempted assassination.
“Our God still saves. He still delivers. And he still sets free. Because on Saturday, the devil came to Pennsylvania holding a rifle. But an American lion got back up on his feet and he roared,” Scott said.
Other notable moments from the RNC included comments from Amber Rose, who said that American families were “safer, wealthier and stronger” under Trump.
“I’m here tonight to tell you, no matter your political background, the best chance we have to give our babies a better life is to elect Donald Trump president of the United States,” Rose said.
The convention is expected to continue through Thursday (July 18).
