A Maryland man is facing charges after he killed his ex-girlfriend and her mother during a first meeting with his newborn, who he also tried to set on fire, PEOPLE reports.
34-year-old Keanan Turner, the ex-boyfriend of Ebony Wright, killed his former partner and her mother, Wanda Wright, in April 2021. The killing unfolded after Turner had arranged to meet his newborn for the first time.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington D.C., Turner and Ebony were dating when she got pregnant with the child. Turner allegedly asked Ebony to terminate the pregnancy, but she declined to do so. The man then ended communication with Ebony.
Ebony sued Turner for child support after giving birth. In response, Turner asked if could meet his child for the first time, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. The pair arranged to meet at Ebony's home in Washington D.C. with her mother, Wanda, and sister present.
Turner shot Ebony in the head and Wanda in the back of the head. He also opened fire against Ebony's sister, who survived the shooting.
“Prior to leaving the apartment, the defendant lit the custody paperwork on fire in an attempt to kill the child,” prosecutors said.
Ebony's sister was able to carry her nephew out of the apartment before notifying authorities about the incident.
Turner was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder while armed with aggravated circumstances, assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, attempted first-degree murder of a minor, second-degree cruelty to children, arson, and destruction of property.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help raise money for funeral expenses and caring for the child.
Turner is set to be sentenced in October.
