A Milwaukee woman has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after arguing she was legally allowed to kill a man who sex trafficked her.
On Monday (August 19), Chrystul Kizer was handed down an 11-year prison sentence and five years parole in connection to the 2018 fatal shooting of Randall Volar, 34, per CNN.
Kizer shot Volar at his home in Kenosha, Wisconsin when she was 17 years old. She also burned his house down and stole his BMW, according to reports. Court documents state Kizer told her boyfriend that she was planning to shoot Volar because she was tired of him touching her.
Kizer initially faced several charges including first-degree intentional homicide, arson, car theft, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. However, Kizer argued that Volar had begun trafficking her at age 16.
In 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that trafficking victims could be absolved of first-degree intentional homicide for offenses committed as a direct result of being trafficked. This allowed Kizer's team to present evidence at trial that the crimes she was charged with were “a direct result of the violence she experienced."
Kizer maintained that she acted in self-defense but in May she pleaded guilty to a reduced count of reckless homicide, court documents state.
