A mother and daughter were shot and killed by the child's dad in an apparent murder-suicide in North Carolina.

According to WRAL, 27-year-old Kiera Massenburg and her six-year-old daughter, Zoey Jones, were killed in a shooting that left two others wounded on August 11 in Sharpsburg, North Carolina. The shooter, identified as DaQuan Marcato Jones, who was Zoey's father, reportedly fled the scene with the girl and Massenburg in his car.

Jones dropped Zoey off at a home in Nash County with life-threatening injuries before she was taken to a hospital where she later died, according to reports. Massenburg was found dead in the backseat of Jones' vehicle in the driveway of a home on Jamie Rd. in Battleboro, North Carolina.

"As units were approaching the residence, they heard a gunshot come from inside of the residence. At this point, units surrounded the residence. A male subject then exited the side door to the residence and advised us that the suspect had shot himself," Nash County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Authorities found Jones with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a bedroom of the home.

According to jail records obtained by WNCN, Jones was released from Edgecombe County Detention Center just one day before the shooting. He was previously arrested on charges of assault inflicting serious bodily injury in connection to a July 2024 incident during which he allegedly punched Massenburg in the face.

Authorities said the pair were dating.

A GoFundMe was created to raise money for funeral expenses.
