The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards saw only one Black actor take home an award during Sunday's (September 15) ceremony.
Ahead of the ceremony, several Black stars including Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, and Janelle James were nominated for the 2024 Emmys. Ayo Edebiri, Donald Glover, Idris Elba, Aja Naomi King, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and more also earned Emmy nods before the awards ceremony at LA Live Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
However, out of 14 Black acting nominees featured in the televised categories, Lamorne Morris was the only Black winner. Morris took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Anthology for his performance in FX’s Fargo.
Several Black stars were recognized during the pre-ceremonies for the Creative Arts Emmys earlier this month.
Angela Bassett won her first Emmy, taking home the trophy for Best Narrator for her work on the National Geographic docuseries Queens. Michaela Coel was also awarded Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
During Sunday's ceremony, Damon Wayans, Niecy Nash, and Viola Davis took the stage as award presenters. The Television Academy also paid tribute to legendary Black actors who died this year, including Louis Gossett Jr., Carl Weathers, and James Earl Jones, during the In Memoriam segment.
