The granddaughter of an elderly Florida couple found dead in March has been charged, PEOPLE reports.

On Thursday (September 12), 38-year-old Jalisa Hill was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to the killing of her grandparents, Major, 89, and Claudette Melvin, 85. Maurice Newson, 30, is facing the same charges along with one count of robbery with a firearm.

The Melvins, who had 28 grandchildren, were found dead in their home on March 22, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department previously said. When police responded to the scene, officers discovered that their vehicle was missing. The car was found at a tow yard in May, according to police.

Newson was believed to have sold the vehicle to the tow yard and was initially arrested on charges of theft of a motor vehicle and dealing in stolen property. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on bond.

Police said they later obtained further probable cause and charged Newson with murder. Authorities said they believe Hill "worked in conjunction with Maurice Newson to murder her grandparents." The two reportedly have previously dated.
