Video shows a Miami school officer slamming a teenage girl to the ground while responding to a report about a fight.
The fight reportedly broke out last week at Miami Edison Senior High near the locker rooms following a football game. Bystander video captured 15-year-old Ikeria Tate's encounter with the officer.
In the video obtained by Local 10, the officer appeared to fling the girl in the air before slamming her on the ground on her back. The officer continued to grab onto the teen as she flailed her arms in an attempt to free herself.
An arrest report states that Tate wasn't a part of the fight that broke out, but she allegedly tried to intervene as officers were responding to the incident. According to the report, Tate tried to punch an officer in the face, which the teen denies.
“He should’ve never (done) that. He had grabbed me and slammed me on the floor and one of them stepped on my hair,” Tate told the local outlet. “I wasn’t throwing a punch at him. I was telling him to get off me.”
The teen was arrested on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and disrupting a school function.
Tate's mother, Monique Warner, also insists the officer used excessive force against her daughter.
“He shouldn’t put his hands on nobody’s kids like that. You are supposed to help them. This is why the kids are scared of the law,” Warner said.
The school police department is investigating the incident. It's unclear if the officer involved will face disciplinary action.
