Former President Donald Trump is threatening to send legal migrants in Springfield, Ohio back to Haiti.

During an interview with NewsNation on Wednesday (October 2), Trump said he wants to revoke Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants in Springfield, per CNN.

“You have to remove the people, and you have to bring them back to their own country. They are, in my opinion, it’s not legal,” the former president said.

When asked specifically about revoking migrants' Temporary Protected Status, Trump said, “Absolutely. I’d revoke it, and I’d bring them back to their country.”

Trump's comments come after he, his running mate, JD Vance, and other allies fueled false claims about Haitian migrants eating and abducted pets in Springfield.

The false allegations come after the Biden administration expanded the Temporary Protected Status designation for Haiti in June, which has allowed roughly 309,000 Haitians to live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation. According to Springfield police, between 12,000 and 15,000 Haitians legally live in the city under the TPS program.

City officials have confirmed that they've received no reports of anyone abducting or eating pets.

When asked Wednesday about what would happen if Haiti refused to accept the migrants he planned to deport, Trump said “They will."

“Well, they’re going to receive them, they’ll receive them. If I bring them back, they’re going to receive them,” he said.
