An Ohio man who went viral last year for having the same birthday as his wife and newborn twins has been shot dead, PEOPLE reports.
Scierra and José Ervin, Jr. made headlines for sharing a birthday, August 18, with their family of four. At the time, José said sharing the special day with his twins was “best birthday present ever.”
“We can just do one big celebration, do it all at one time,” the 31-year-old father said of the family's shared birthday. “That would be beautiful.”
Less than two months after the twins' first birthday celebration, José was shot and killed in Garfield, Ohio on October 4. According to reports, the 31-year-old was shot multiple times at a Dunkin' Donuts.
No one has been arrested in the shooting. Police identified a car of interest in the case, which also involved an altercation at a nearby Shell gas station.
José’s sister, Chloe' Ervin-Dozier, said her brother was at a local bar with his best friend on the day of the shooting before they headed to the gas station. Video footage shows José asking a group of people for a cigarette before a confrontation ensued, Ervin-Dozier said.
According to Ervin-Dozier, José backed away when he noticed one of the men had a gun, but he was eventually shot at the nearby Dunkin' Donuts.
“He chased my brother down like he was prey,” she said of the shooter.
José was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise money for his funeral expenses.
