Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Donald Trump's running mate, dismissed the racist jokes made by a comedian at the former president's Madison Square Garden rally, saying "We have to stop getting so offended at every little thing."
On Monday (October 28), Vance appeared at a rally in Wausau, Wisconsin, where he responded to Tony Hinchcliffe's controversial jokes about Puerto Rico, Latinos, and Black people, per Forbes.
“These Latinos, they love making babies, too. Just know that they do,” Hinchcliffe quipped at Trump's rally. “There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside, just like they did to our country.”
“There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” he added during his set.
Hinchcliffe also joked about how he and one of his Black "buddies" "carved watermelons" together.
Vance said Monday he hadn't seen Hinchclife's remarks and wouldn't comment on specifics, but “maybe it’s a stupid racist joke … maybe it’s not.”
“We are not going to restore the greatness of American civilization if we get offended at every little thing, let's have a sense of humor,” the senator added.
“Can we all just take a chill pill and take a joke from time to time? This is ridiculous,” he said.
Despite Vance's dismissive remarks, the Trump campaign attempted to distance itself from Hinchcliffe's comments shortly after backlash ensued.
Danielle Alvarez, senior adviser for the Trump campaign, said in a statement: “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
