An Ohio sheriff's lieutenant is under fire after he allegedly said he wouldn't help people in need who voted Democrat.
According to a Facebook post uncovered by WHIO, Lieutenant John Rodgers of the Clark County Sheriff's Office wrote on October 20: “I am sorry. If you support the Democratic party I will not help you."
Rodgers reportedly made similar comments in other posts, saying he wouldn't help a Democrat "survive the end of days."
“The problem is that I know which of you supports the Democratic Party and I will not help you survive the end of days,” Rodgers wrote, per WHIO.
The sheriff's lieutenant also allegedly said he would require voter "proof" from those in need.
“At the end of the day I will require you to provide proof of who you voted for if you ask me for help,” he wrote. “Weapons and ammo are not cheap.”
In response to the posts, the sheriff's office called Rodgers' comments "inappropriate," adding that they don't reflect the department's views.
“It is understood that while these comments are highly inappropriate, they in no means reflect the Clark County Sheriff’s Office delivery of service to ALL our community,” the sheriff's office said in a statement. “The community has a right to be upset over the actions of Lt. Rodgers and he, as well as the Sheriff’s Office in general, will have to work even harder to replenish the trust of members of our community."
The sheriff's office said Rodgers received a written reprimand for violating the department's social media policy.
According to the Springfield News-Sun, Rodgers said he wasn't aware of the posts on his Facebook page and couldn't find them. He also blamed the incident on sleeping medication that the lieutenant said causes him to "out of character," per reports.
Rodgers added that he deactivated his Facebook after the posts surfaced.
