A viral Thanksgiving tradition is set to continue for its ninth year.
Jamal Hinton took to social media to announce his plans to spend Thanksgiving with "Grandma" Wanda Dench for the ninth consecutive year.
"Excited to announce that I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year for Wanda and I! 🦃✨ Looking forward to a day filled with good food, great company, and lasting memories. Year 9 coming soon!🖤" Hinton wrote alongside a collage of photos from his viral gatherings with Dench over the years.
Dench initially texted Hinton by accident in 2016, believing his number belonged to her grandson. The incident went viral after Hinton asked if he could still get a Thanksgiving plate and Dench welcomed him to her holiday celebration.
The two continued the tradition even through the pandemic in 2020 and when Dench's husband, Lonnie, died of COVID-19.
This year's Thanksgiving celebration will come just a month after Dench revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In a social media post, Hinton shared a message on behalf of Dench, detailing her diagnosis.
“Earlier this year I came down with bronchitis and had a CT scan to check out my lungs," Dench said in her message. "That’s when a mass in my breast was detected and they suggested I get a mammogram and that verified I had breast cancer. I have been currently going through chemotherapy.”
“Cancer does not run in my family and all the mammograms I have in the past were always negative,” she continued. “In 2022, I turned 65 years old and thought I would have my last mammogram and not have to think about it again. But I was wrong.”
Dench said she's been undergoing treatment with the help of “wonderful," kind,” and “supportive,” people at The Breast Cancer Center.
