A 60-year-old DoorDash driver in Baltimore is set to sue the city after she was allegedly flashed by a customer but later arrested by police, the Baltimore Banner reports.
Jackie Conway, a retired captain in the Baltimore City Sheriff's Office, was delivering a DoorDash order on October 29 when she said she was flashed by a customer at his door.
Conway said she retreated and called 911 for indecent exposure. However, when Baltimore County police officers arrived, Conway was arrested on charges of first and second-degree assault.
“All that work I did in public service was just gone in that moment,” Conway, who served 20 years with the Baltimore City Sheriff’s Office, told The Baltimore Banner. “It was just gone.”
Conway's charges were later dropped, but her attorneys, J. Wyndal Gordon and Raouf Abdullah, believe she was a victim of racial or gender discrimination and are planning to sue the city.
The customer involved told police he was wearing an oversized shirt and boxers when he answered the door. According to the customer, Conway was sitting in her vehicle across the street, and he approached her after she didn't respond to his messages.
According to a police report, the man alleged that Conway told him to “Get away from my car before I put a bullet in you." The customer said he raised his hands and walked back to his home.
Conway said the man wasn't wearing pants or underwear when he opened the door. According to the retired captain, the customer approached her vehicle aggressively, prompting her to grab her gun in a downward, "low-ready" position. Conway had a walk-and-carry permit, which she showed to police.
Still, Conway was arrested to taken to the Towson precinct, where she was held for several hours.
“I was providing a service to someone,” Conway said. “And they come and lock me up.”
It remains unclear why Conway was arrested.
“She has an arrest history, which is extremely disturbing for someone in law enforcement,” Abdullah said. “Even though this gets dismissed, that blemish remains forever.”
“She’s embarrassed, humiliated, offended,” Gordon added. “It’s just a very disturbing situation that absolutely should’ve never happened.”
